01 Multilingual extract from Romania: the basics
As a rule, when you request a Romanian birth, marriage or death certificate from the authorities, they will issue you an official document which can be used inside Romania and, exceptionally, in a few other countries (for some you would still need a Legal Translation). You can see a list of these countries here.
However, for most countries, you would have to go through two more steps: obtain a Legal Translation for your document, and also obtain an Apostille or Legalization, depending on where you wish to use it. One way to streamline this process would be to use a specialized service, like us! However, getting the Apostille, Legalization and Legal Translation would still add to the costs.
Therefore, a few enlightened countries, including Romania, have decided to go forth and establish a document that can be used in any of these countries, without either an Apostille, a Legalization or a Legal Translation. This is the multilingual extract!

Model of a multilingual extract of birth from Romania
In other words, the multilingual extract is a type of Romanian birth, marriage or death certificate with the following specifics:
-> it can only be used in a limited number of countries; and
-> the names of the fields are already translated in the languages of every country where it can be used.

02 Where can I use the multilingual extract?
The multilingual extract can be used in any of the following countries which are a party to the Convention [no. 16] on the issue of multilingual extracts for civil-status records signed at Vienna on 8 September 1976. This is the Convention which established the multilingual extract, and it was adopted under the aegis of a little-known but very useful international organization called the International Commission on Civil Status, whose website is www.ciec1.org.
The following states are parties to the Convention (as you can see, they are quite different in history and cultures): Austria, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Croatia, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, and Turkey - a total of 24 states.
03 How can I get the multilingual extract?
You can obtain the multilingual extract in the same way as you would obtain a Romanian Birth certificate, a Romanian marriage certificate, or a Romanian death certificate. The links go to the step-by-step instructions on how to do this yourself.
